What is the best software for connecting a Sony Handycam to W2K?

I bought a used Handycam DCR-TRV240. It works great, but I can't find the right software to connect.
I have a Digital 8, and use Vegas Video Editing Software..the most common way to connect it is by running Windows Movie Maker (Windows) or IMovie (on a Mac). These are free programs. Once they are open, plug in your camera using Firewire (or USB), turn it on and choose "Play/Edit" Mode on your camera. A wizard should open up, or if not Tasks / Capture Video.
I tried looking up a solution and discovered that XP or Vista makes this much easier. I understand why you had to ask "Answers" now..well, I found this on a forum.
Autopatcher 2k has it, along with almost every update imaginable. I'm running Win2k SP4 and I most certainly am running Windows Movie maker...just Google Autopatcher 2000 and get the August 2006 Full edition. However, the verison is 1.2.3 and does not support many formats (no FLV, MKV or OGM love)...
Just fire up autopatcher, deselect everything except "windows Movie maker" under "Windows Addons".
