Augury, not compatible beyond Windows XP
On the merchandise site it says, "...camcorder may not be recognized by the computer when connected. In this lawsuit, check to see if there is an updated driver available for your model." There are no mark of cadency driver updates available for this camcorder beyond XP. So, if you want to run it on any PC with Vista or Windows 7, that PC will not concede the camera. When trying to install the camera software, Vista will plan b mask it and recommend getting an updated driver from the Sony site. Do that and you will see the quote above, and allow with this WARNING. This most likely applies to all Sony digital tape camcorders. So, be painstaking out there! Can't imagine spending $500 on this, either. I purchased mine in 2005 for $280.

It captures digital video on Digital8 media to initiate sharp, high quality recordings. It has a 20X optical/990x digital zoom and an way out for Night Shot as well as a Steady Shot Stabilization System to help colour your videos smooth going. You can use it for USB Streaming. Notable Idea for a Camcorder - Plays Older 8mm and Hi8 Tapes

When I got this camcorder, the technology honourable started going to the miniDV's. At the same time, I have several 8mm and Hi8 home movies that were bewitched with an analog camcorder. This was an easy solution to digitize the old school tech so I can restyle them and burn them to DVDs. I use a Macmini or Macbook to edit the movies.

For new pictures, it does not matter if you use the Hi8 or 8mm tapes. Hi8 does not have any advantage since the signal is now digital, so I buy the demean priced 8mms. This is not HD, but was a big step-up from my old camcorder. 20x optical zoom is queer. It also has digital zoom to almost like infinity (which you do not want to bother with unless you are plainly hardly playing around with cheesy effects).

Controls are very easy, but you may want to report register out the manual if you want to take advantage of all the features, like digital effects.

This is cumbersome if you compare it with the newer miniDVDs. But if you need to play both your older analog 8mms and digitalmovies, this is a superb solution.

Sony DCR-TRV480 & TRV 460
The sellers here at amazon are gouging the customers. Though I feel in selling what the market can bear, they are gouging and the customer should shop around. You can get 1/2 the guerdon of the cameras on Ebay. in fact I suspect these sellers are buying from ebay and selling twice the payment on Amazon. For those of us like myself wanting to transfer your hi8 videos you are better off seeking a merchandiser who sells the Sony videomans like the walkmans, they are mini vcrs that will do the same as this camera, and you will be superior to transfer your hi8's to DVD and you can do so for 1/2 the price they are selling here.
