i am going to buy the SONY DCR-DVD650 DVD Handycam® Camcorder and i dont want to buy it unless i can put all of the videos on to my computer, because i ,like to edit my videos on my compuer. help PLEASE!!????
Well, you can, BUT, out of the digital formats, DVD is generally the most difficult to get into an editing program, such that DVD camcorders should just come with an apology to the buyer. The format is highly compressed, and it doesn't play nicely with editing software. Avoid. The best target customers for DVD camcorders are those who like to record video, than instantly watch it in a DVD player. If you like to edit, you will deal with frustration, and a lot of it.
Hard-drive and flash memory camcorders are tempting, and they might work for you, but the problems are similar - the formats are highly compressed, and they don't always work with editing programs. Then, when you run out of space on the camera, what do you do with the video? You either have to start erasing things or take the extra step of backing up the video somewhere else.
MiniDV tape is often the best way to go for those who like to edit. It uses a different type of compression, and less of it. It's the highest-quality format of the consumer formats. It is compatible with just about every editing program ever created. Since it uses tape, and tape is relatively cheap (under $3 at B&H in New York), you don't worry about putting the video data somewhere else to back it up; you just keep the tape.
