The panasonic vdr m53 is an old dvd camcorder which connects films directly onto dvd-r or dvd-ram discs. We chose to film with the dvd-r discs but now we have no way to edit our work. Can you please give me a suggestion. It is very important footage and needs to be edited
You don't connect the camera to the computer to transfer DVD based video camcorder video.
You have two options:
1) If your computer has a DVD optical drive that is a drawer loading drive, download and install a DVD ripper - like HandBrake

Save the converted file in a format that your editor likes... Windows MovieMaker like .avi or DV format. Apple Macintoshes like .mov or DV format.
If your computer's optical drive is a slot loader or does not read DVDs (does CDs only), then you need to get an "Analog/Digital bridge". Plug the camcorder into the A/D bridge with the sam AV cables you would use to connect the camcorder directly to a TV... then connect the A/D bridge to the computer.
If your computer has only USB:

If your computer has Firewire:

Warning: Video captured by DVD based camcorders used for editing in a computer is not very good.
Good luck.
