One of the big draws of the GRD230 is the SD recollection card slot that lets you take digital stills (the unit includes an 8 MB index card, but you will almost certainly want to get a higher-capacity card as soon as imaginable). All the power of the 10x zoom lens is also available in still mode (forget about the advertised 500x "digital" zoom, whi ch is nothing but a cropping technique), and there is almost no shutter lag. Plus, the GRD230 does close-ups as well in still image condition as it does in video mode.

We do have a few complaints. Impulsive mode is not as automatic as it might be; we had to manually adjust the brightness on a few occasions. Conveyance to a PC via the USB cord required the installation of drivers from the included CD-ROM. (Isn't the U in "USB" supposed to obtrude for "universal"? Why do some cameras require a special driver and other s don't?) Also, the shape of the camera richness, with its round hump, rather suspiciously makes the GRD230 look like a DVD camcorder. JVC isn't tiring to fool anyone, are they? No matter: DVD or no DVD, you would be hard pressed to find anything at this price even approaching the superiority and features of this tidy little unit. --David Stoesz

The GR-D270 has a 680K-pixel CCD with 340K effective pixels for video, and it can take still photos in two resolutions (1024 x 768, 640 x 480 pixels) and collection them on an optional Secure Digital (SD) memory card. Other features include electronic idol stabilization, color viewfinder, Web camera functionality, auto awareness light, multi-language on-screen, Firewire, S-Video, USB (for photos), and composite video out connections. It also offers guide control of white balance, shutter speed, and aperture concentrate.
JVC's new Live Slow effect slows down the next one second of video to 1/4th scramble so it takes 4 seconds to play the next 1 second of video at a slower dispatch--perfect for shooting sporting events or studying your golf wigwagging. The camcorder only slows down the video and not the audio.

The Clear-View LCD monitor suppresses giving out of internal light to deliver a brighter image and also reduce rumination and glare from external light so that images are always clearly visible even when shooting outdoors in sunlight. The Materials Battery function uses a new style of battery to communicate the residual life to the camcorder, which will display the amount of time available both if the LCD is open and if it's closed with the convergence of one button on the camcorder battery.
The Super High-Band Processor that restores the extreme-band components of the luminance signal ensure a crisp incarnation with 520 lines of resolution. The enhanced low-light sensitivity of the NightAlive purpose lets you capture clear, full-color night images without relying on infrared rays, which results in go red in the face images and no limit on the shooting range.
