Makes unpractical .TOD files, and therefore, useless camera
I bought this as a approve of camera for some corporate testimonials. It has been a huge pain trying to find any of the features I dire, if they exist at all. The autofocus is choppy and never really locks on. So, usability, quite terrible.

But even on top of that, back at my computer, I try importing the videos into Final Cut Express 4 (FCE), and the files are the dope and useless .TOD files (why no .MOVs, JVC?). I search the web looking for a converter, or a way to denote them. I find a FAQ on JVCs website which tells me I have to download and install 3 separate files from 3 part places, and one of the links is all in another language and the link is bad. Essentially, I am at a loss now. There are a million .TOD to .MOV converter websites, but they all look wonderful shady. So my options now are try downloading some shifty-looking third party software at best to use these files, or not use them at all. JVC has put me in a seriously crappy situation. I will be returning this device instantly, and hopefully I can find a way to still use these files.

In summary: "HEY, THIS JVC CAMCORDER IS ON SALE. SHOULD I BUY IT?" Answer: "No! It's like buying a car that only takes gas sold at one gas site, 200 miles away. It doesn't matter what the car does if you can't use it."

Prodigious all-round HD camera
I've been using this camera solidly for precisely 2 years and I find it to be very useful and think the images look amazing for it's bonus. It's light and small and I carry it with me everywhere I want to shoot without having to lug too much material around.

The TOD format that it records in is just MPG and you can simply rename the file lengthening - it's annoying but I wrote a little one line shell script to rename the files which I can then occupation on in any standard editing program. While there are complaints of a lack of view finder I cannot see the notion of it and find the 16x9 screen to be simply awesome.

Also the night mode that some have complained about is absolutely really good! Sure it's choppy if you're hand holding but on a tripod it categorically comes into its own and brings some great colour into very dark shots with very smidgin ambient light. I highly recommend working in dark settings with a enchiridion aperture setting rather than relying on the auto mode. Let's face it, if you're readily available holding in night mode and expect things to be smooth your expectations of a camera in this bonus range are far too high and you really need to lay down a hell of a lot more money for your HD camera acquisition.

My only real annoyance is not really the camera's fault but a fault in HDD cameras in mongrel. The microphone (which is actually pretty good) tends to record the outcry of the hard drive as it records in really quiet settings. This can be greatly diminished with a hotshoe mic or removed quite with a external mic however. Any serious videoing should incorporate these accessories anyway.

Overall a great mediocre HD camera that is both robust and handy while producing some wonderful HD footage providing you take the compendious amount of time to learn its capabilities.

High calibre camcorder, but lack viewfinder
Powerful fit and finish, easy-to-use features, image quality is good under sunshine, but poor in a low-light environment. I paid $530 on Amazon in Elegant '08 so it's a good value.

JVC Hd3
This Camcorder is pathethic.... First off, Digital Stabilization is the worst Understanding Next to Intrapolated Pictures for higher Megapixels on your digital camera.... and it works about the same... Unfortunately you can't shift that off in Auto Mode, and Manual mode is too hard for anyone who doesn't know the camera to use... Require of viewfinder is a lost cause if you plan on shooting anything at higher speeds... Like rc airplanes....

and why the heck would they jemmy interlaced video... It sucks... it Looks ghastly viewed on my 50" lcd hdtv.... I have to first convert everything over to deinterlaced... Also to swath the extra byte off their format to make it reg mpg you need to import it into powerdirector it will conver/flay the encoding off and leave you with a regular mpg (no conversion or re-compression)

I would have bought the Canon hd10, but the career of the zoom on the canon was slower than a snail, but video on the canon looked much advance... I should have just put up with the slow zoom... at least the canon stays in indistinct that way...

PS, the $400 minidvd camcorders Have Way better stabilization... this camera decent isn't very usable... it prob isn't worth a dime... Prance JVC and buy the canon...

Incomparable item, great price.
This camera is unrestrained quality. I love the large lens, the great features, the easy handling, and the sharpenss of the footage. 60gb allows for up to 5 hours of HD footage, which is mythical. The stock battery may only last about 1-2 hours of use, but I'm surprised how long the first tax actually lasted. Quality, even at 10x zoom is great, and there is some noise in low-feather-brained conditions, but filming without proper lighting is asking a little much.

Inclusive, I'm very happy about this purchase, and I would recommend it for anyone looking to buy a great camera for every day use, or even for filming inadequate movies for fun.

The Data is in the Pudding
The ammunition is in the pudding.

I shot an entire feature-length documentary using a JVC GZ-HD7U, a twin of Schriber shotgun mics (Model SA-568ZM) strapped to it and plugged into its stereo input jack using a Y connector, and a GLIDECAM 2000 Pro.

The documentary business required RAPID deployment of camera and sound equipment on turning up with little or no advanced notice. The portability of this camera made it ideal for these hard shooting schedules.

The site where the majority of shooting was done required notable mobility in small spaces. This camera was small enough and light enough to ploy around with, even when the shotgun mics were strapped to it and all of that rig was mounted on the GLIDECAM.

With the documentary being stimulus in multiple locations - indoors and outdoors - using only available lighting (no supplementary artificial lighting was required for any part of the documentary shoot), this camera performed completely well for all lightng situations encountered.

Having limited idle-be that as it may intervals between shooting sessions - typically as little as 1 hour - downloading recorded video from the camera to horde storage (I used 4 1-terabyte WINBOOK drives hooked up to a Toshiba Acolyte laptop) was a breeze.

As for battery capacity, I managed just first-rate using only two JVC Battery Packs (BN-VF823U) and one JVC AA-VF8 charger. Battery level indicators on the camera were wonderfully obvious. Shooting schedules for the documentary typically ran from sunup to well beyond sundown and by always having one of the batteries in the mount while shooting with the other - switching batteries as needed - I never, in more than 100 hours of shooting for the documentary, found myself holding a ineffective camera with no juice available to operate it.

Durability of the camera was prime. It never got dropped but it did get its share of bumps during the shoot and none of them damaged or negatively sham its performance whatsoever. It was operated in extreme temperature situations ranging from perishing to +100 degree, high-humidity summer temps without a hitch or glitch.

I have never rated any fallout I have purchased before in my life 100% five stars across the board. I can make these ratings for the Everio GZ-HD7U with whole confidence and just cause derived from long hours of hands-on, overflowing field use in shooting the documentary.

Extraordinary Camcorder
Understand some poor reviews but to my delight it is just what I wanted. An upgrade to HD from a 3 whittle Sony. Videos are gorgeous, battery life is better than reviews. I bought an unfolded life battery and have only had to use it once on an extra inning baseball game. Integrates faultlessly with iMovie 09 once I learned how to create and play playlists in the camera. I am a gratified camper. The unit arrived promptly from the vendor with all original garnishes. Could not tell it from brand new.

peradventure a 4.5 but a 1 never
I have owned this camera for about 2 years, recovery is tricky and does take some reading on how to do it, but it is not difficult once you learn. 1.8-1.9 cleft, low light ability is what that means. If it is very dark then get a video light. Solder a microphone and the sound is fantastic. IS with video you will still need a tripod, get the better of, or monopod at minimum, especially for long filming. Two years ago, I decipher almost every thing that I could about camcorders before purchasing this camera and found it to be the best on the market at the bounty I paid for it. It is still one of the best, if you use manual controls, which many others don't even offer. But like we say in DSLR cant maybe some people like to keep it in the "P" professional setting. Cheers.

Fritter away your money wisely! This is not one of those!
I have owned a JVC GZHD7 for almost two years now and filmed about a hundred hours with it. My rating of a `1' may arrive d enter a occur across as harsh; Even though the GZHD7 has a few nice features it lacks ease of use and for the charge. It really isn't worth the hassle! I wanted this camcorder to just give me what I filmed so I can throw it to a DVD. That's all I wanted, instead JVC's uses a unique file format, which should be a patron service crime. The accompanying software is useless and is a bait and alteration tactic to buy the software that works. JVC did not share the file format codec with any other video editing software out there! So you WILL NOT be proficient to use a majority of the programs without hours of converting it to be a playable movie.

A few positives; The GZHD7 is captivating as hell! It's a reliable and a very durable camcorder. The picture quality is smashing. If you plan to keep all the recordings on the camcorders hard drive, this camcorder is for you.

The cons of the JVC GZHD7 is it's a misery in the #@$ to edit. If you want to film, edit and copy to DVD, you should over another camcorder. Honestly!

* The file format is not a simple Mpeg or AVI but rather a intricate format which requires you to purchase very expensive programs to convert it. Even the software that comes with it is scrap, but you can always upgrade it to work. No hanks JVC!

* Recording in low light mode is decidedly useless. Imagine a very slow image being distorted, almost psychedelic like! Cubicle phones take better images in low light.

* Nightalive. Just doesn't calling!

* You will lose a lot of quality if you use the Image stabilization option while recording.

* The way the system saves the files is a suffering. Every time you pause a recording a separate file is created. Now with all the geniuses at JVC, you would have in mind they would use a filing system that works. Files are saved as MOV001 - MOV010, than MOV001a and so forth. Files are not grouped by day and time which would keep them in order; instead files are transferred to your computer in alphabetical and numerical. Surmise your sons football game, you push pause between downs and later go to cautious of it on your PC and it is the start of 3rd quarter, then a play from 2nd quarter and so on..

I know some will disagree with this criticize but that's ok. I hope at lest you will reconsider what you really want in your camcorder. Admissible luck filming.
