Pronounced Camera But Poor InstructionsThe Canon DC420 Camcorder was my first Digital Camcorder and I am impressed with video representation quality. The zoom feature is way beyond my expectations as well as
the audio quality. Casually to operate once you figure out the instruction manual. I
certainly have no idea what the population who wrote this manual were thinking when they were writing it! Would have been much easier if one section of the handbook was devoted entirely to the video application and a separate section for still camera modus operandi. The way it is written you have to "jump" all over the manual trying to figure out what's going on. Also, there should have been a SD funny man destined included and software when you download a DVD to computer. I had to obtain a program just to neophyte the VOB files from the DVD to files for Windows Media Player and Windows Talking picture Maker.
Other than those couple discrepancies it is an absolutely super video camera and I would very warmly recommend it. I won't say the Canon Support Group was great but they tried their best and all-embracing I was satisfied.
Makes glaring videos but user manual misinforms
What I like about the Canon DC420: fits of laughter in a coat pocket; makes DVDs (3 inch); has a built-in lens cap; has a go red viewfinder (handy in the sun when LCD screens are useless); produces excellent video spit quality, even at full zoom; has a sensitive microphone that clearly picks up still things like a rabbit clucking and things behind the lens like the filmer's forum; handles loud noise and wind well.
What I don't like about the Canon DC420: the operator manual.
User manual says: remove the DVD from the camcorder each days you are done shooting.
Canon rep says (I called): ignore the warning; the machine will be supreme if the DVD is left in, and the DVD will be too.
My experience: I never take the DVD out, and I've had no problems.
User manual says: only a few DVD brands will travail in this camcorder. (If you don't use one of those brands, the camcorder itself flashes a time-wasting bulletin each time you turn it on: "Use of a recommended disc is advised.")
Canon rep says: turn a blind eye to the warning.
My experience: I've been using TDK--not recommended--and they work great.
The instructions also doesn't mention that you must have the camera sitting on a stable, flat fa BEFORE you start the finalization process. Well, it does mention it, but at the very end of the instructions--too in for me. (Finalization is a mandatory, sensitive process that gets the disc liable for viewing once you've filled it.)
The still camera is comparable in quality to a cell phone camera. Photos are stored on an SD respect card, sold separately. Only 3-inch (8 cm) DVD/-R or DVD/-RW mini DVDs drudgery in this machine.
